Sheila Szabototh Canadian Fine Artist
Oil Painter

~ Testimonial ~
"I am pleased to have known Sheila Szabototh for 12 years now having met her through our mutual interest in amateur astronomy. Over the last few years I have watched Sheila's artistic skills develop dramatically. Sheila not only observes and paints the sky, but she takes a keen interest in a variety of natural subjects and renders them all to good effect. However, her astronomical renderings are uniquely her own and they are not only painted with fidelity, they are aesthetically pleasing and provide a view beyond one available through the telescope and camera. The difference is the addition of imagination and artistic interpretation. I look forward to viewing Sheila's future efforts and feel that she is a developing talent worthy of note." - Richard Jordan

My art work displays, on canvas and in public, a part of my deep and sometimes demented soul, my turbulently flowing flood of emotions - raw in rough form. I paint with fiery passion providing me with an outlet to express my inner being which I am unable to do with the written word.

At the time of creation, each piece represents my dance with nature, frozen-in-time, and the way in which I was softly caressed by inspiration. "In The Moment" is the deep relationship I strive to paint and the relationship I offer the viewer to experience.

When admiring an oil painting I am the most excited about how the bold, deep flowing brush strokes of colour (impasto textures) have a soul existence and are the brain of the painting that speaks to me to convey the emotions of the displayed subject.

I've experienced melting into colours and feeling the loneliness of viridian green, the waving and upset alizarin crimson, the throbbing energetic lemon yellow and the love and caring traits of phthalo blue. My art is not unlike a performance of the universal language - music.

I hope you, the viewer, enjoy my interpretations of nature and are touched in some way by my work by connecting with the feelings and senses it produces within yourself.

About My Paintings

I've tried experimenting with different techniques and ideas. I love to violently brush and palette knife the paint onto the canvas. Leaving the undercoat of paint to show though into the finished painting can dramatically add depth and interest. Impasto painting, dry smudging, glazing and manipulating the paint any way I can think of are fun ways to express my emotions about a subject. I do not always mix colours on a palette as I often find mixing on the canvas creates more character to a painting. I also, many times, paint straight from the tube. Sometimes I paint from reference materials and other times my creativity flows directly from imagination. I've had art teachers, over the years and recently, be upset with my free-minded/stubborn way of expression. I believe if you want to paint, paint! -- paint from your soul -- any way it comes out!! That is what individual creativity is all about and I'm having a great addicted-time doing it !

ASTRONOMY ~ VIEW THIS COLLECTION

As an amateur astronomer, every time I look up at the vast and beautiful deep ceiling of the universe, I'm reminded of how much the human race is really just like a colony of minute ants running around on this planet Earth. It reminds me how lucky we are to experience such a delicate and exceptional life and how insignificant our existence really is in the big picture. I'm in awe of our beautiful universe. My goal is to capture the rich movement, colours and textures of cosmic energy, gas and dust.

LANDSCAPES ~ VIEW THIS COLLECTION

I am fascinated by trees ~ tracing their crooked shapes, smelling their leaves, touching their bark, and imagining their strength but mostly connecting with the stories hidden in their forms and sensing their emotions.

Landscapes transport me to a different world each with its own humorous or sad story to tell ~ fresh like a description of a new chapter in a book whether it be of a farm field, a flowing stream or a home to trees. In the landscape gallery there are wooded area and water reflection scenes that I have adored from my camping, canoeing and hiking experiences.

Cloud forms are personally intriguing. Remember as kids how it was fun to imagine physical shapes in the puffy white cotton-ball clouds? Clouds are just as interesting to me now as every cloud I ever see is so unique!
